Hey Guys, I posted on Instagram stories about a month ago sharing How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes and how we keep them away so we can spend as much time outdoors as we can and several of you asked for more info. So I went ahead and partnered with the Texas Department of State Health Services to pull together info on How to Declare WAR on Mosquitoes. So, I created this post in partnership with Texas DSHS however all opinions are my own.
This whole post started out of pretty organic with my hubby, kiddos and I outside, our favorite place to be, playing with our chickens. I posted a few tips on how we keep the annoying blood suckers away since my hubby and oldest daughter get allergic reactions to their bites. Several of you reached out and asked WHAT DO YOU DO TO KEEP MOSQUITOES AWAY? So we created the following video, check it out:
The Quick of It: Declare WAR
- Wear long sleeves and pants as much as you can.
- Apply EPA approved insect repellent
- Remove standing water
What Products & Measure My Family Takes:
- Make Yourself Unappealing – use Bug spray and apply it to all exposed skin. There are so many great options on the market now. It's important to apply sunscreen before using repellent.
- Mosquitos dunks. Place these in areas you must keep water outside, like a bird bath, so that when mosquitoes lay eggs, they hatch, the baby mosquitoes feed on the pellets and die.
- Extra allowance for each kid who kills 50+ mosquitos a day (I'm Kidding….Kinda)
- Remove ALL standing water. After all the rain we have had, take just a couple minutes to step outside and dump anything you see.
- Remove all piles of leaves and improperly stored outdoor materials. A mosquito only needs a tablespoon of water y'all! YIKES!

Most of Texas has a long mosquito season and many Texans are likely to travel to areas at risk of mosquito-borne diseases. These factors increase the risk for the spread of these mosquito-borne diseases such as the Zika virus, West Nile virus, Chikungunya virus and dengue fever.
In addition to the diseases they can spread, pesky mosquitoes can be an annoyance. Mosquitoes can turn daily activities into a less enjoyable and possibly irritating experience.
While some people who contract mosquito-borne diseases may only experience mild symptoms, they can become a carrier for the disease. This puts the people around them at higher risk for contracting these diseases, including those who may be more susceptible to the life-altering conditions caused by these diseases.
We want to encourage the general population to take simple measures to protect themselves and their families from mosquito bites. Note women of child-bearing age, travelers and older adult population have more specific guidelines they should follow to ensure a safe and happy life.
